Out of the Attic: Inviting Antiques in the 20th Century
Briann Greenfield, Associate Professor of history and coordinator of the Program in Public History at Central Connecticut State University

The lecture takes place at the Meeting Hall at in Town Hall, 52 Lyme Street, Old Lyme. Admission is free but reservations are required. Please call 860-434-5542 x 111.

In this era of "Antiques Roadshow" and eBay, it is hard to imagine a time when Americans did not treasure the home furnishings of elite early American families. But antiquing, particularly the practice of valuing old things for their aesthetic qualities, is a relatively recent invention whose origins can be found in the early years of the twentieth century. Greenfield's recently publish book, Out of the Attic, examines the role of collectors, dealers, and museum makers in the creation of the modern market for antique goods. A book signing will take place after the lecture. Books will be available for purchase.
