Williams Collage Museum of Art
Julie Mehretu: City Sitings
Join friends and other Museum members for a day of great art at The Clark
Art Institute and Williams College Museum of Art in Williamstown,
Massachusetts. Our day will begin at the Clark to see the new exhibition
Like Breath on Glass: Whistler, Inness and the Art of Painting Softly, the
first exhibition to explore “painting softly,” brings together forty
paintings by leading American artists working around 1900, including
Whistler, Inness, William Merritt Chase, Twachtman, Steichen, and the
Florence Griswold Museum’s own, Emil Carlsen. We will be welcomed by Cody
Hartley, the Clark’s Assistant Curator of American Art before exploring the
exhibition on our own. Generally thought of as an era of virtuosic
brushwork, where touch and surface were nearly as important as the subject
being painted, the exhibition traces a quieter approach to painting that
evolved during this period. Several of the painters featured have
individually been called Impressionist, Tonalist, or Symbolist but that,
through their quiet surfaces and soft-contoured subjects, invite a quiet,
contemplative approach to looking. We will also enjoy a guided highlight
tour of their collection.
Lunch will be on our own in the Clark café and there will be ample time to
wander the galleries including their new Stone Hill Center. Tucked amid the
wooded slope of Stone Hill, the center features light-filled galleries for
special exhibitions and a new, state-of-the-art facility for the
Williamstown Art Conservation Center.
Before leaving Williamstown we will venture over to the Williams College
Museum of Art for a highlight tour led by one of their undergraduate student
docents. One of the finest college art museums in the country, the Williams
College Museum of Art houses 12,000 works. Within the broad range of time
periods and cultures represented, the collection emphasizes modern and
contemporary art, American art from the late 18th century to the present,
and the art of world cultures. During our visit, the featured temporary
exhibition is Julie Mehretu: City Sitings featuring 12 of the artist’s
monumental paintings inspired by community, history and the built
environment.
