Join friends and other Museum members for a day of contemporary dance in the shadow of the Berkshires at Jacob's Pillow, the home of America's longest-running dance festival, celebrating its 76th anniversary in 2008. The Florence Griswold Museum has reserved a block of highly desirable matinee tickets on Saturday, July 12th at 2pm to one of the
outstanding upcoming performances of two new dances by the London’s dynamic and young choreographer Hofesh Shechter.
Our visit will begin with a boxed picnic lunch under the tent on the Great Lawn at Jacob’s Pillow after which there will be time to explore the grounds of this National Historic Landmark, stroll the gardens, walk the Wetlands Trail, observe dancers or students in rehearsal, or soak up the atmosphere anywhere on the idyllic campus. We will then gather at the Ted Shawn Theatre (the first theatre in the United States designed specifically for dance) for a 15-minute pre-show talk by one of the Pillow’s esteemed scholars-in-residence.
The performance itself is hailed as “the most important new dance work to be created in Britain since the millennium” by The Observer. The company leader, Israeli-born Hofesh Shechter, makes a power-packed U.S. debut with Uprising and In Your Rooms. These two energy-charged dances connect with audiences with their dramatic and physical intensity. The dance, Uprising, described as “pure pleasure” begins with seven male dancers who emerge from the shadows to bombard the stage with their edgy energy, bonding and sparring, making up and falling out. A highly charged short work with a propulsive, percussive score, Uprising leaves audiences buzzing. The second dance, In Your Rooms brims with playful, gritty physicality and is at times provocative, political and deeply
personal, and features an original music score composed by Shechter himself which will be performed live.
