Join friends and other Museum members for an extraordinary day in New York
City based on the places and activities enjoyed by the Museum’s featured
artist Tula Telfair, whose exhibition Tula Telfair: Landscapes in
Counterpoint is on view at the Florence Griwold Museum through June 27th.
Telfair teaches painting at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut,
and she lives in the Chelsea area of Manhattan. This day trip will allow us
to experience Telfair’s world in this neighborhood rich with history,
culture, and great food.
Our day will begin with a guided walking and eating tour of Chelsea Market
and the Meatpacking District led by Foods of New York Tours. On this
three-hour walking tour we will explore two old industrial areas that have
evolved into the hottest new destinations in New York City. With the help
of our guide we will discover gourmet “mom and pop” food shops, ethnic
restaurants, boutique shopping, the new High Line elevated outdoor park, and
more. Our tour will feature delicious tastings done in the food
establishments and one is done seated in a restaurant. The tour includes
all the food tastings (enough for lunch), bottle of water, and our
neighborhood guide. Our tour will happen rain or shine.
After our food tour we will board the bus and travel over to the
Metropolitan Museum of Art to see a selection of American landscape
paintings that inform and inspire Telfair’s work. The Museum’s Interim
Curator Amanda C. Burdan will join the group and offer commentary on the
paintings and the connection to the work on view back in Old Lyme.
